DEX project phase 1 results: identification and validation of criteria

The DEX project (Extrinsic Durability) comes at a time of tightening regulatory requirements calling for a fuller account of product durability. It is now established that a garment's effective duration of use is a major determinant of its environmental impact, and that focusing on intrinsic durability alone, physical resistance, fails to capture the full picture.

DEX aims to measure the extrinsic durability of clothing, defined as the set of external factors that influence the number of wears. This first deliverable presents the results of the phase dedicated to identifying, structuring and qualifying the criteria behind this durability.

A scientific approach

Two literature reviews

A socio-cultural review (71 publications analysed) and an econometric review conducted by CREDOC.

Scientific validation

Each criterion qualified by an international scientific committee for its robustness and measurability.

Strategic framework

A cross-cutting analysis: level of evidence, link to the number of wears, and level of action for each criterion.
